Why Organ Donation
Here's John's, one of our directors, story:
"The subject of organ donation is extremely close to my heart. In 2018 my wife was diagnosed with Kidney failure following complications with treating pneumonia. She was already a type 1 diabetic, which meant that the decline in her kidney function happened rapidly. In early 2019 she went onto dialysis at home each night, which was a horrible, stressful experience for us and our son, who was only 5 at the time had just started school.
The diabetes made things very difficult, and I found myself in a constant state of worry, while also trying to keep a brave face for my wife and son. Our life was dominated by the condition, and it felt like everything was on hold.
Her consultant recommended that she have an SPK (simultaneous Pancreas and Kidney transplant) and she was put onto the "waiting list". It seemed like an eternity waiting for "The Call" and it felt like it was never going to happen, meanwhile it was struggle to keep my wife in a fit state to receive the surgery. Eventually in October 2020, in the midst of Covid-19, she finally got the call.
Since then, everything changed, my wife got her life back, my son got his mummy back and I got my wife back. The diabetes has gone and it's been amazing.
If it wasn't for the decision made by my wife's donor and their family, I honestly don't think she would be here today. Speaking with your family about your organ donation decision and confirming your wishes on the NHS app is so important."
Organ donation has had a huge impact on our small business but we're very aware of how lucky our relations at Mower Magic were to receive this precious gift. Over 7000 people are waiting for a transplant in the UK, meanwhile only 1 in 100 people who die in the UK are usually able to be donors. Although we're now in an opt-out system, it is still very important for you to confirm and share your choice to ensure that your wishes are honoured - we want to help spread this message.
