Spring Lawncare Jobs

Spring Lawncare Jobs

With March over, now is finally the time when the weather starts to improve, the clocks 'spring forward' and we look to our gardens once again. It's the perfect time to get those leftover jobs from last year completed and get your grass ready for another season of outdoor activities.

So, what should you consider doing this weekend to prepare?

The Garden & Lawn Area

For many gardens, this is the largest area and most people's main concern. It's time to make sure the lawn is not drowned in rainwater, and also to consider investing in some Viano Lawn Boost. When getting the lawnmower out, don't cut in the early mornings, during this time, grass will usually be wet because of rain or irrigation. Mowing a wet lawn can damage your mower. It can also cause your grass to tear. You want to perform the first grass cut of the year in spring, so if you haven't done that already, why not start this weekend? From there on, mow the lawn at least once every week.

The First Cut (should not be the deepest).

Let's get that mower out of the shed. You may consider a few drops of oil on the blade and moving parts. All mowers should be looked over before using, whether you've taken it into your local lawnmower service shop or checked it yourself - if you haven't had it serviced over the winter, you should clean all the old grass off it before using it. If you've got a petrol mower you can check the oil level and drain the old fuel from your machine, it's highly likely that it's gone stale, and can damage your machine if used. Replace it with some new fuel. If you've got a cordless machine, then you should charge your batteries up for at least 24 hours before usage.

Speaking of servicing, it's not too late to get it ready for the season. Petrol mowers should be serviced yearly - the best time to do this is at the end of the season, as most mower service centres will be booked up with long queue times, so get your mower in early. Electric and Cordless mowers don't need servicing - but you should check the condition of the blade and replace it if it has been worn down.

Once you've done all that, make sure the grass is dry, start on a higher cut setting than usual, and start cutting.

As we start to head towards the spring season, now is the right time to scarify your lawn. It's good practice to use your scarifier and remove the thatch or moss in April when it gets warmer, and the days get longer. Spring, that's the best time for your lawn to recover and regrow from any issues you've had over winter. Not to mention, your lawn would also benefit from scarifying at the end of the season, it's best to do that end-of-season scarifying in September before the temperatures drop for Winter.

When it comes to scarifying, there are plenty of different methods for what you can use, if you prefer the personal touch, or want to keep fit, then you can always use a garden rake, and do the scarifying that way.
