Mountfield Lawnmower. Special petrol hose from the fuel tank to the carburettor became brittle and snapped. Couldn't just replace it with a piece of hose because the bore at on end is 5mm and 3mm at the other. Needed the correct replacement part from Mountfield.

This was a like-for-like replacement of a split fuel pipe, which I discovered after getting a very strong smell of petrol after using the mower: that had never happened before. While I was removing the faulty pipe I worked out what to look out for when installing the new one. The old pipe had simply come to the end of its working life after four years - not bad for a piece of plastic, so I had no concerns about the suitability of the new product. The pipe is just a push-fit onto a spigot at each end, held on by a small circlip. There's also a plastic push clip in the middle, attached to the air filter housing. Note that these three parts are not included with the replacement pipe - make sure you keep the originals. Its much easier to get at the carburettor end of the pipe if you take the air filter housing off altogether - two screws undone and it slides off locating bars (watch for small cylindrical washers in holes in the housing - they are loose). There is also a small in-line filter or similar inside the pipe at the fuel tank end - this is why that end of the pipe is wider than the front end. Note that this filter is not included either so again make sure you keep the original. Slide it into the pipe then carefully locate both onto the spigot - the filter goes inside, the pipe outside the spigot. Oh, and remember to put the two circlips on the pipe before you push it onto the spigots!
